Deadman's Island was a rock outcropping at the entrance to Los Angeles Harbor. It got its name from bones that were found there. First there were mysterious bones of a ship's captain who was apparently murdered by his crew in a mutiny. Then there were bones from sailors and marines killed during the Battle of Old Woman's Gun. The bones were all removed and reinterred and the "island" was destroyed to make for safer navigation into the growing harbor.
